Two questions on grammar: one was parts of speech and the next question you had to fill in missing punctuation.

English comprehension:
Passage called 'The Tale of Beowulf' with seven questions; the highest mark question was four.

Writing:
You had to write a page or more on the titles: Best Day; Monster; In Trouble or Trapped.

Mathematics
You had every section of maths, but they were not as focused on decimals, percentages or fractions. It was a 29 question booklet.

Comprehension 1:The first comprehension passage was about a poor tinker (described as 'a gypsy' (sic) called Ikey, and his family. It told a story for the month April and June.

Comprehension 2: In the second comprehension the passages were mainly about the history of time. They were all about time and inventions to tell the time. Every question had a different passage that went with it. Eight teachers each put forward a different section. For the last question you had to draw a diagram of your own invention to tell the time, using just the objects they had given you.

These were the questions a Falcons girl was asked at her scholarship interview last year. She was interviewed by the English and Mathematics teachers, and then by the Head:

Asked to pretend that you have eight fingers on each hand, and work out sums is 'eights' and 'units'

5. Which is your favourite out of the schools you are applying for? (The pupil was said 'Latymer', of course!)
6. Do you know anyone who goes to Latymer?

Golden Rule 3: Turn a Negative into a Positive

The third golden rule is to make sure you give positive answers to questions that expect a negative reply. Here is a classic example:

Which is your least favourite lesson?

Child A: Mathematics.

Child B: I find French challenging, because I find it hard to learn all the vocabulary, but I'm working hard to improve: I've made some vocab charts and stuck them on my bedroom wall, and I get Mum to test me over breakfast.

Child A just sounds negative; Child B admits they're not brilliant at something, but they tell the interviewer how they're trying to improve. The key words here are 'challenging' and 'but...'

(Oh, and never tell an interviewer your least favourite lessons are Maths or English. They're such important subjects that it will make the interviewer think that you won't fit into their school. The best bets are subjects like French, Music, Art and PE, because it is easy to say what you're doing to improve your skills)

Golden Rule 2: Don't Wait for Why?

The second golden rule is to make sure you don't make the interviewer ask you 'why?'. Study the following exchange:

Who is your favourite author?

Child A: Lemony Snicket

Child B: Lemony Snicket, because he writes such witty, original books. I love the way that he can create ridiculous scenes, but still make you care about the characters. I read all of the 'Series of Unfortunate Events', and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

Which child do you think impressed the interviewer? That's right - the child who didn't wait for the interviewer to ask 'why?'

Golden Rule 1: 'Sell Yourself'

You will feel nervous. You will feel you are going to say the wrong thing - but if you remember our 'golden rules' you can't fail to impress an interviewer.

The first golden rule, and arguable the most important, is to sell yourself.. You get just one chance to show the interview what a clever, hard working, charming young lady you are, so seize the chance to show him what you can do!

Think about the interview from the teacher's point-of-view. They want to work with enthusiastic pupils, so show her how keen you are to learn!

Another way to think about it is to imagine if your parents were trying to sell their car. Would they tell the prospective buyers that there is a bit of rust underneath the bonnet, and the motor doesn't start up in winter? No! They'd talk about all the good bits!

You should do the same thing in an interview. Don't lie - you'll get caught out if you do - but do seize the chance to tell the examiner about the instruments you play, the clubs you've joined, and your achievements in, and out, of school.
